Coordinating Cataract and Glaucoma Care

When a patient has both a visually significant cataract and glaucoma (or elevated intraocular pressure), surgical planning requires evaluating the optic nerve, visual fields, medication burden, and target pressure alongside standard cataract measurements.

Dr. Schmitz completed subspecialty fellowship training in glaucoma at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute. During a consultation at SharpeVision in Bellevue or Renton, he evaluates how glaucoma affects intraocular lens choices (such as preserving contrast sensitivity) and whether cataract surgery alone or a combined glaucoma procedure is appropriate.
